Pizza Dough
Ingredients
- 2 1/4 tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast
- 1 tsp sugar 110°F or 43°C)
- 1 cup warm water 110°F or 43°C)
- 2 1/2 cup all purpose flour 2 1/2 to 3 cups
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp salt
Instructions
Activate the yeast
- In a small bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the water and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy. This indicates that the yeast is activated and ready for use.
Mix the Dough
- In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour and the salt.Create a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the activated yeast mixture and olive oil.
Knead the Dough
- Stir the wet and dry ingredients together until a dough begins to form.Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface.Knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes, adding more flour as needed, until you have a smooth, elastic ball of dough. It should be slightly tacky but not overly sticky.
First Rise:
- Place the dough ball in a lightly oiled bowl and cover it with a damp cloth or plastic wrap. Allow the dough to rise in a warm, draft-free place for about 1-1.5 hours or until it has doubled in size.
Shape the Dough
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release any air bubbles. Divide the dough in half (this recipe makes two 12-inch pizzas) and shape each portion into a pizza crust on a floured surface. You can roll it out with a rolling pin or use your hands to stretch it into the desired shape.
